Exercise In The
Morning!
If I had to pick a single
factor that I thought
was most important in a
successful exercise or
weight loss program, it
would be to exercise
first thing in the
morning... every
morning!
Exercise Melts Body
Fat
If you want to reduce
your body fat, focus on
increasing the amount
of exercise you get
rather than decreasing
your food intake. A
recent national study
was done using two
groups of sedentary
men, one group in their
20's and the other over
age 65.

WALKING THE WALK…

Let me begin by stating that I didn’t really believe I was “heavy” or that I needed to lose weight. Sure I
could stand to lose those last 10 pounds that seem to plague most women, but I never realized how
big I was until I started to get small.  When I made a commitment to myself last May to make daily
exercise a priority, my intent was to get healthy. If any weight came off, that was strictly a bonus.

I began my new routine by walking on the beach for 30-minutes, one of the benefits of living in Myrtle
Beach, South Carolina. Armed with sunglasses, visor and I-pod, I walked the beach and set goals
as I went.. Initially, I aimed for the huge mansions dotted along the oceanfront. After that, I tried to
make the edge of the hotel section. Each week or so, I would set a new goal. Not always aiming for
distance, sometimes I would want to beat my previous time.

A walk on the beach is not always a “day at the beach.” Soft sand leads you to struggle for footing,
seagulls compete noisily for the area, and visitors searching for shells sometimes stalled my gait,
especially during high tide when the walkable beach area shrunk. And the weather is not always
predictable, but rain or shine, high tide or low, I continued to make my health a priority.

And then an amazing thing happened. My clothes started fitting better -- jeans that had gotten too
snug hung more loosely, tops no longer gaped. I increased my walk to 45 minutes. My mood
improved – I was able to shrug off the little things that usually irritated me.

I became excited about my progress and incorporated diet into my health equation. I began keeping
a daily food journal. My mantra was, “If I bite it, I will write it.” I ate foods low in calories and fat, high in
fiber. I even began drinking Green Tea.  I became more aware of my food selections and started
making better choices. My family benefited from the change as well in small ways. We now use
wheat bread exclusively and if low fat is available in something we need, I buy that.

I have now lost those “last” 10 pounds and the additional 10 that were hanging around. I feel great,
look good and have a confidence in myself that I haven’t felt in years, and I am healthier now than I’ve
been in years.
